Examinations

At Ponsonby School of Dance, we offer graded classes within The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) syllabus for Ballet, and the Asia Pacific Dance Association (APDA) syllabus for Jazz, Contemporary, Musical Theatre & Hip Hop.

Both RAD & APDA are recognized internationally and are taught globally. Students will be taught the syllabus throughout the first half of the year, sitting examinations in Term 3.

After exams are complete, students will then prepare for the end of year showcase.

Why should my dancer sit an exam?

Whilst exams are not compulsory at PSOD, we do highly recommend students give them a go, as the process assists with dancer development and allows students to move up to the next grade safely.

Exams are designed to motivate and encourage students of all ages and levels of ability, through a systematic measurement of progress and attainment.

What are the benefits in sitting a dance exam?

Exams provide students with an important and achievable goal to work towards. By achieving those goals we often see a remarkable boost in self-confidence – something we all need from time to time!

Studying for a dance exam also promotes discipline and commitment within the studio environment; a skill benefiting more than just the dance world!

What is involved in a dance exam?

All PSOD students are well prepared for their exams. Preparation at home is also encouraged to help students feel extra prepared.

Students sit their exams with their peers, and they are always held at our studio so that students feel safe, secure and able to present their work just as they have practiced.
